About Psychiatrists

A Psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in psychiatry and is committed to the mental health and stability of patients.  Psychiatrists are able to prescribe psychiatric medication and can order specialized tests as well as conduct physical exams in order to diagnose and treat mental disorders.  Psychiatrists typically work in a private practice, a hospital setting or in a government agency.

Psychiatrists use a combination of psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, hospitalization and medication to care for patients.  In some cases, they may also utilize electroconvulsive therapy when medication is not an option.

According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth for Psychiatrists is expected to be above average through 2016.  There is a tremendous need for Psychiatrists in the public and private sectors, as the National Institutes of Health estimates that 26% of the adult population suffers from some form of diagnosable mental illness.  Because Psychiatrists may be employed in a variety of settings, the median annual salary range for Psychiatrists in the U.S. is estimated to be between $150,000 and $300,000.
